Pope open to helping return Ukrainian children in Russia

Pope Francis says the Vatican is willing to help facilitate the return of Ukrainian children taken to Russia during the war ABOARD THE PAPAL PLANE -- Pope Francis said Sunday the Vatican was willing to help facilitate the return of Ukrainian children taken to Russia during the war, saying the Holy See had already helped mediate some prisoner exchanges and would do “all that is humanly possible” to reunite families. “All human gestures help. Gestures of cruelty don’t help,” Francis said during an airborne press conference en route home from Hungary. Francis also revealed a secret peace “mission” was under way. However, he gave no details when asked whether he spoke about peace initiatives during his talks in Budapest this weekend with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban or the representative of the Russian Orthodox Church in Hungary. “I’m available to do anything,” Francis said. “There’s a mission that’s not public that’s underway; when it’s public I’ll talk about it.” The Internati

TOKYO -- Japan will lift most of its coronavirus border controls , including a requirement that entrants show proof of three vaccinations or a pre-departure negative test, beginning Saturday as the country’s Golden Week holiday season begins and a large influx of foreign tourists is expected. All entrants with symptoms will still be required to take COVID-19 tests after arriving until May 8, and those who test positive will be placed in designated quarantine facilities, Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno told reporters. After May 9, testing of those with symptoms will be voluntary. Japan will also drop a special measure subjecting visitors from mainland China to random testing upon arrival that was implemented in late December

Andy Warhol portrait of OJ Simpson goes on auction block

An Andy Warhol silkscreen portrait of O.J. Simpson is going up for auction NEW YORK -- It was 1977, and Andy Warhol was at work on his “Athletes” series, portraits of top sports personalities who, he felt, were gaining cultural prominence just like “the movie stars of yesterday.” One of them was then the star running back of the Buffalo Bills: O.J. Simpson. Simpson, then 30, showed up without a Football or a jersey, and Warhol had to scramble to find a ball. That Polaroid shoot led to 11 silkscreen portrait s; one of them is now going on auction for the first time. Signed by both men, the portrait is billed by the auction house as a work that brings together two of the most recognizable names of the 20th century and captures “a trajectory of celebrity and tragedy.” “Warhol certainly could never have imagined how differently the image would come to be viewed, nor the controversy that still lingers around its subject today,” said Robert Manley, co-head of 20th century and contemporary

Asian elephants have lost 64% of their suitable habitat, scientists say

Asian elephants have been losing significant portions of their suitable habitat for the past several centuries. Habitats for Asian elephant s have decreased by more than 64% across the continent, equating to about 3.3 million square kilometers -- more than 850 million acres -- since the year 1700, according to a new study published Thursday in Scientific Reports. The timeframe coincides with colonial-era use of land in South Asia and the agricultural intensification that followed. Biologically, elephants are important for their ecosystems and are nicknamed the "ecosystem engineers," author Shermin de Silva, an assistant professor of ecology at the University of California, San Diego, and founder of elephant conservation nonprofit Trunks & Leaves, told ABC News. Elephants roam in Minneriya, a large reservoir in Sri Lanka. Shermin de Silva The findings are significant because Asian elephants are extremely adaptable and able to live in a range of habitats, including open gra

Next permanent Tottenham manager? Ryan Mason confirms 'I feel ready'

Ryan Mason has declared his interest in taking on the permanent role as Tottenham Hotspur manager, admitting that feels "ready" for the job. The 31-year-old's playing career was cruelly cut short by a serious head injury picked up in 2017, which forced him into retirement just over a year later. Two months later Mason joined Tottenham's coaching staff, and since then he has worked his way up from developing the club's youth players to working as a first team coach. Mason has been handed interim control at Spurs after Cristian Stellini was relieved of his temporary duties in the wake of Sunday's 6-1 thrashing at Newcastle - the Italian had only recently been instilled as interim boss himself after Antonio Conte was sacked at the beginning of April. This isn't Mason's first rodeo as interim boss - he also took over following Jose Mourinho's dismissal in 2021 - and his first assignment is against Champions League qualfication rivals Manchester United.

Mikel Arteta claims Man City clash won't decide Premier League title

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has rejected the idea that Wednesday night’s clash with Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium will decide the Premier League title. The Gunners have led the league for most of the season, having established themselves as serious title contenders for the first time since the 2007/08 campaign. But three successive draws against Liverpool, West Ham and Southampton have opened the door for City. Arsenal had led 2-0 against both Liverpool and West Ham, before allowing their opponents back into those Game s. A 3-3 tie with Southampton last Friday was then the result of a late Gunners comeback after initially unthinkably going 3-1 down at home against the league’s bottom club. With City taking 25 points from the last 27 on offer, a run which has included a win over Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium in February, the previously sizeable gap between the top two has shrunk. Ahead of Wednesday night, it stands at five points, while City have two games in hand. Should G

In recent years, the Australian island of Christmas Island has become synonymous with one thing: red crabs. Each year, millions of these bright red creatures emerge from the island’s forests and make their way to the ocean in a mass migration that has become a major tourist attraction. While the sight of so many crabs can be a little ᴜппeгⱱіпɡ at first, it’s hard not to be іmргeѕѕed by the sheer scale of the event. And despite their somewhat omіпoᴜѕ appearance, these crabs are actually an important part of the island’s ecosystem. So just what are these сгeeру crawly creatures , and why do they take over the island each year? Red crabs are a ѕрeсіeѕ of land crab that are found only on Christmas Island, which ɩіeѕ in the Indian Ocean roughly 2600 km northwest of Perth. They are easily recognizable thanks to their bright red carapace, or shell, which helps to protect them from ргedаtoгѕ. Adult crabs can grow to be up to 11 cm wide, making them one of the largest land crab ѕрeс

Jurgen Klopp reveals reason behind Liverpool's recent improvement

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has admitted that his side have stepped up their defending in recent weeks to try and get back to their best. The Reds, who have endured a tricky season from start to finish, have ended a three- Game losing streak and are now on a run of four Game s without defeat, securing draws with Chelsea and Arsenal before going on to beat Leeds and Nottingham Forest. After Saturday's hectic 3-2 triumph over the latter, Klopp insisted his side's rejuvenated approach to defending was behind the recent upturn in results. "Things have changed," Klopp acknowledged. "How we defend is much better, ball-orientated and being compact. "I saw a lot of top counter-pressing today. That, for us, is super important. We are much clearer in that department. It feels like it changed. Read the latest Liverpool news here feed "If you are solid, aggressive and positive in your defending, you can build on that. For me, it is the first time this season

Jurgen Klopp reveals what is holding Darwin Nunez back at Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp says Liverpool are working 'massively' to help Darwin Nunez improve his English and acclimatise to the Premier League after his move from Benfica last summer. The Uruguay international has displayed flashes of brilliance during his first season at Anfield, netting 15 goals in all com Pet itions for a struggling Reds outfit. However, there has been the odd negative moment, including a red card against Crystal Palace in one of his first Game s, and his finishing has been criticised. "Darwin is a player with a different skillset to our other players – which is good," Klopp said. "He’s a real handful, a machine. He will score a lot of goals, and he’s scored a decent number already. But of course he’s still adapting. "His English still isn’t great but we’re working on that massively. It’s not helpful to go through a debut season when it’s difficult for the whole team. How can a striker shine when the whole team is struggling? It’s not impossible but

Iran's top leader rules out referendums on divisive issues

Iran’s supreme leader has ruled out the holding of popular referendums on state policies DUBAI, United Arab Emirates -- Iran’s supreme leader on Tuesday ruled out the holding of popular referendums on state policies. Iran faced calls for a referendum on the Islamic Republic itself during anti-government protests last year, and a moderate former president recently suggested such votes should be held to decide major policies as a way of reducing divisions. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has the final say over such policies, rejected the idea when asked about it during a meeting with university students. “Where in the world is this done? Is it possible to hold a referendum for various issue s of the country?” he asked. “For any single issue , the country would be engaged in debate and arguments and polarization for six months, so that a referendum can be held on that issue .” He appeared to be referring to recent remarks by former President Hassan Rouhani, a relative modera

Now community leaders and an attorney for Yarl’s family are demanding justice for the Black teen, who is recovering at home after being released from the hospital on Sunday, and they are questioning whether race played a role in the shooting. The Kansas City police chief said an investigation is ongoing but that, so far, race does not appear to be a factor. The shooter was taken into custody Thursday but released the next day after consultation with the prosecutor
